Today, the Miami Open wrapped up its round of 32 in the men’s singles draw. Play was headlined by a pair of Swiss superstars in Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka—both of whom secured wins.
World No. 14 Tomas Berdych started the day’s action with a morning win over Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller 6-3, 6-4. Berdych was a Miami Open finalist in 2010.
Two Americans took to the courts in John Isner and Sam Querrey—both of whom will not be moving on.
Isner was defeated by Germany’s Alex Zverev 6(5)-7, 7-6(7), 7-6(5), while Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut beat Sam Querrey 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Bautista Agut now holds a 3-0 record against Querrey.
The day’s marquee matchup pitted Federer against Juan Martin Del Potro. In their first contest since 2013, Federer moved to 16-5 against the Argentine with a 6-3, 6-4 win. The Swiss magician is the only former Miami champion remaining in the field of play.
In doubles play, the American duo of Jack Sock and Nicholas Monroe defeated the No. 1 seeded team of Henri Kontinen and John Peers 3-6, 7-6(5), 10-8. Sock is also through to the round of 16 in singles play where he will face Jared Donaldson.
The French team of Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut forfeited against the North American team of Brian Baker, U.S., and Daniel Nestor Canada. Officials announced that Herbert had a leg injury.
In the evening session, Nick Kyrgios beat Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic 6-4, 6(4)-7, 7-6(2). The win moves Kyrgios to 3-0 against the big-serving Croat over the course of his career.
In the last men’s contest of the day, Wawrinka, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, defeated Tunisia’s Malek Jaziri 6-3, 6-4. Jaziri falls to 0-10 in career matchups with top 10 opponents. A quarterfinals appearance for Wawrinka would be his best showing in Miami.
The men’s round of 16 will commence Tuesday. Headlining the day will be both Federer and Rafael Nadal.
