The men’s doubles competition at the Miami Open has a new winner. The 2017 champions are Poland’s Lukasz Kubot and Brazil’s Marcelo Melo.
The No. 6 seeded duo beat the unseeded American team of Jack Sock and Nicholas Monroe 7-5, 6-3. All four competitors were contending for their first Miami Open title.
Kubot and Melo’s path to the finals came with a semis win over the North American duo of Brian Baker, U.S., and Daniel Nestor, Canada. After losing in the finals at Indian Wells, the champions dropped just three sets over the course of the Miami tournament.
Sock was the only former Miami finalist with a 2015 doubles loss in the championship to the Bryan Brothers, but, he would have a shot to rewrite his wrong.
Just days ago, Sock and Monroe defeated the Bryan Brothers in the semis to make their second finals appearance. Their first finals run came with a 2015 tournament win in Stockholm.
After teaming up in 2011, the duo of Sock and Monroe is now 10-4 in career play. On their way to the Miami Open finals, the two defeated Henri Kontinen, who is set to become the first player from Finland to rank No. 1 in ATP doubles standings.
Sock is now 8-9 in ATP World Tour finals appearances.
