Here’s an interesting tidbit about each of today’s singles matches:

Kei Nishikori vs. Fernando Verdasco

Despite his status as the No. 5 ranked Spaniard, Verdasco is now 0-5 against top 10 opponents in 2017. His last win against a top 10 competitor was a 2016 Australian Open victory over the No. 1 Spaniard Rafael Nadal.

Johanna Konta vs. Pauline Parmentier

In 2015, Konta defeated world No. 2 Simona Halep in Wuhan, China. Prior to the win, the last British woman to beat a No. 2 opponent was Sue Barker in 1981.

Federico Delbonis vs. Jan-Lennard Struff

In 2016, Lennard-Struff posted his first victory against a top 10 opponent when he defeated No. 3 Stan Wawrinka.

Angelique Kerber vs. Shelby Rogers

With a 2016 Australian Open win, Kerber became the first German since 1999 to win a Grand Slam singles title.

Jared Donaldson vs. Milos Raonic

After Raonic dropped out of play, Donaldson became the first qualifier since 2011 to reach the fourth round of the Miami Open.

Nicholas Mahut vs. Guido Pella

Both competitors are in the third round of the Miami Open for the first time.

Julia Goerges vs. Risa Ozaki

Ozaki’s current ranking of No. 88 is a career-high.

Venus Williams vs. Patricia Maria TIG

At the 2017 Australian Open, Williams became the oldest finalist in the Open Era. The match between Williams and her sister, Serena, also had the oldest combined age of any Grand Slam final meeting in the Open Era at 71 total years.

Benoit Paire vs. Donald Young

This is Young’s best showing in eight Miami appearances. Paire defeated Young in their last contest, which came in 2012.

Taylor Townsend vs. Svetlana Kuznetsova

Kuznetsova has reached at least the quarterfinals in six of her last eight tournaments.

Shaui Peng vs. Samantha Stosur

In 2014, Shuai Peng rose to No. 1 in doubles rankings, which marked the first time a Chinese male or female was No. 1 in singles or doubles.

Rafael Nadal vs. Philipp Kohlschreiber

Nadal’s contest today marks his 1,000th match in ATP World Tour singles play. He is the 11th player since 1968 to achieve the mark.

Lara Arruabarrena vs. Madison Keys

After a win at Eastbourne in 2014, Keys became the youngest American to win a singles title since Vania King in 2006. At seed No. 8 in Miami, this ties the highest seeding for the American at a WTA Premier Mandatory event.

Jeremy Chardy vs. Fabio Fognini

With an upset of Marin Cilic in the previous round, Chardy broke an eight-match losing streak against top 10 opponents. This is his first third-round appearance in Miami since 2010.

Simona Halep vs. Anett Kontaveit

Despite playing in her fifth tournament of 2017, prior to this match, Halep was yet to win back-to-back contests.

Jack Sock vs. Jiri Vesely

Prior to his semifinals loss against Roger Federer at Indian Wells, Sock had a four-match winning streak against top 10 opponents. His current ranking of No. 17 is a career-high.
