The Miami Open Wheelchair Tennis Singles final saw world No.1 Diede De Groot and 50-time major winner Shingo Kunieda emerge victorious as the first champions of the inaugural event. De Groot secured the victory by defeating Colombia’s Angelica Bernal 6-3 6-5. The 27 year old boasts an impressive record with 39 grand slam titles, 3 Paralympic medals and she has not suffered a defeat in singles since February 2021.
Top seeds Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Daniil Medvedev were among the winners on Terrific Tuesday at the Miami Open, which determined all eight men’s singles quarterfinalists and the first women’s singles semifinalists: three-time champion Victoria Azarenka and 2023 runner-up Elena Rybakina.
The Miami Open Wheelchair Invitational debuted today, featuring both reigning world No. 1 players who advanced to the final. An action-packed Sunday of tennis concluded a successful middle weekend at the 2024 Miami Open, featuring not only wins from Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Jannik Sinner, and Daniil Medvedev but also the last act of former World No. 1 Andy Murray, who but up fantastic fight in what will be his final match in the Magic City.
