Along with the third day of women’s singles, Thursday marked the start of doubles at the Miami Open. The draw was headlined by action on the court and action in the skies, as rain suspended or canceled several evening matches.
The upset of the day was highlighted by American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who defeated world No. 10 Elina Svitolina 7-5, 6-4.
Here are some key results worth noting:
What could top the win for Mattek-Sands? It came on her birthday.
American Madison Brengle was defeated by world No. 3 Karolina Pliskova.
World No. 4 Dominika Cibulkova and World No. 8 Agnieszka Radwanska took care of action in their openers. Radwanska won the Miami Open in 2012.
World No. 36 Lucie Safarova defeated world No. 26 Daria Gavrilova.
Gavrilova was also defeated in doubles play by a team featuring Indian Wells runner-up Svetlana Kuznetsova.
American Coco Vandeweghe was upset by Slovak qualifier Jana Cepelova in three sets.
Caroline Wozniacki defeated American qualifier Varvara Lepchenko. Wozniacki is now 6-1 in head-to-head play.
Among the suspended or canceled matches was a contest between Indian Wells winner Elena Vesnina, who was down in the third set to Ajla Tomljanovic 3-6, 6-4, 5-3.
Another involved American Christina McHale, who held a 6-0, 3-2 lead over world No. 6 Garbine Muguruza.
