There’s a good chance WTA No. 8 Petra Kvitova, the eighth seed in the 2014 Sony Open, could be listening to Pink, hanging out with Daniela Hantuchova or reliving her glorious Wimbledon run of 2011, in her spare time – that’s whenever the 24-year-old Czech lefty isn’t destroying balls with her powerful two-handed backhand and thumping serve.
In the summer of 2011, Kvitova broke through and won Wimbledon, before finishing the year with a WTA Championship, which put her on the doorstep of being world No. 1.
The personable and playful blonde with the piercing blue eyes has her mind set on the 2014 Sony Open Tennis tournament, but Kvitova recently provided an in-depth look into her life, on and off the court.
“Every title I achieve is a special moment for me, but winning (the) Grand Slam in 2011 felt better than all the other finals. It was a dream for me. I had a good year, so it was really special; a lot of good things happened.”
What part of your game do you feel needs more consistency to give you a good shot to win the 2014 Sony Open?
PK: I think (to play at a) higher level my serve and movement needs more consistency.
What do you enjoy most about playing at the Sony Open Tennis in Key Biscayne?
PK: I always enjoy the competition level here; it’s always good to make you want to play your best.
What is it about Miami that you like the most and try to take advantage of when you’re here for the Sony Open Tennis?
PK: I like the city a lot, but I don’t have the time to do everything I want. It’s, I’m 100% focused on tennis and preparing for the tournament. I came here with for two weeks (vacation) and enjoyed the beach a lot. We stayed on South Beach.
How did volleyball, one of your favorite sports growing up, help you to excel at tennis?
PK: I played volleyball when I was small and it was more for fun; it was a sport I enjoyed very much. I don’t play much (anymore), but it helped me stay fit.
Who is your favorite music artist and why?
PK: Pink; I like the texture of her songs – all her lyrics are very rich
