Women's Round of 32: Pliskova, Cibulkova Secure Wins; Radwanska Upset by Lucic-Baroni

On Saturday, the Miami Open opened its third round of women’s singles play, in addition to more doubles action. Headlining the action was Garbine Muguruza, Agnieszka Radwanska and Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

In the upset of the day, Mattek-Sands defeated Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Mattek-Sands has now defeated two top 20 opponents in three days. Play was halted for the third straight day due to rain, so several matches were delayed.

Here are the key results: 

  • World No. 2 Karolina Pliskova, Czech Republic, defeated Yulia Putintseva, Kazakhstan. Prior to Pliskova’s win, they were 1-1 in career meetings.
  • World No. 4 Dominika Cibulkova took care of action against Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens. Cibulkova now has a 5-2 record in career meetings.
  • World No. 6 Muguruza defeated China’s Shuai Zhang. Zhang was 1-0 in previous meetups.
  • Croatia’s Mirjana Lucic-Baroni defeated world No. 8 Agnieszka Radwanska. Lucic-Baroni will face Mattek-Sands in the next round, who is coming off an upset of her own.
  • World No. 14 Caroline Wozniacki defeated Sorana Cirstea. Wozniacki was 4-3 in previous meetups.
  • World No. 36 Lucie Safarova defeated Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic. In her previous match, Tomljanovic defeated Indian Wells winner Elena Vesnina.
  • Despite losing to lower seeds in singles play, both Vesnina and Pavlyuchenkova won in respective doubles matches.
